Laparoscopic surgery is minimally invasive surgery (MIS), also known as Keyhole surgery. It is the most preferred advanced technique in the healthcare industry as it is a modality to reach in human body organs or parts where traditional surgery approaches can’t reach. Therefore, if you are looking for surgery where no pain, no cuts approach is applied with accurate and successful results, you are at the right place, i.e. only at CKS Hospitals.

Types of Laparoscopy Surgeries:

There are two different types of laparoscopic surgeries considered by almost every surgeon, following are the two types of laparoscopy surgeries:

1. Robotic Surgery

Robotic surgery is a system that provides doctors and surgeons with great support and visuality while performing the surgery, allows them to perform safely, less invasive and accurate surgical procedures.

While robotic-assisted surgery, surgeons operate from a console equipped with two master controllers that channelize four robotic arms. By displaying a high-definition 3-D image on the monitor screen, the surgeon can see the surgical procedure better and clearer than ever before. Computer software replaces the actual hand movements and makes the movements precise.

2. Non-Robotic Minimally Invasive Surgery (Endoscopic)

Non-robotic minimally invasive surgery is also called endoscopic surgery. You must be familiar with medical terms like laparoscopic surgerythoracoscopic surgery, or “keyhole” surgery. These are minimally invasive procedures equipped with an endoscope to reach internal organs through small cuts/incisions.

Conducting endoscopic surgery, the surgeon places a thin, flexible tube consisting of a video camera through a small incision or a natural opening like the mouth or nostrils. The tube has a channel to use tiny surgical instruments, which helps the surgeon view the organs on a monitor screen.

This procedure allows the surgeon to see inside the patient’s body and operate through a much smaller incision otherwise operated on through traditional open surgery.

Heart– Atrial septal defects, aortic regurgitation, aortic insufficiency, aortic stenosis, mitral valve repair

Neurosurgery/Spine– Spine conditions, cervical disc hernias, lumbar disc hernias, degenerative disc disease, spinal trauma: skull base brain tumours, anterior cranial fossa (front skull base) tumours, posterior cranial fossa (back of the skull base) tumours

Vascular– varicose veins, venous insufficiency, peripheral vascular disease

Urological– Kidney disorders, kidney cysts, kidney stones, kidney blockage, kidney donation, prostate cancer, incontinence, vaginal prolapse

How is a Laparoscopic Procedure Performed?

Generally, before conducting the surgery, an intravenous tube is inserted in a vein for delivering hydration fluids and special medication by the nurses/anesthesiologist. Once the operating room is ready, you’ll be taken there. Then, anaesthesia will be injected into your IV by anesthesiologists at CKS Hospital, which will make you sleep, so you don’t feel any pain.

Afterwards, laparoscopic surgeons conduct the surgery, and wherein a small incision is created near your belly button by our expert surgeons. Through that incision, a tube is inserted, and carbon dioxide has surged through this tube. This inflates the abdomen allowing the surgeons to see a clear view of your organs. Then, through the same tube, a laparoscope is inserted, which allows the image of the whole area display on the television monitor, which supports the surgeon in operating easily.

If a laparoscopic procedure is conducted to diagnose any condition, it will hardly take an hour. If the surgery is being performed to remove the appendix, more than one incision would be required in the abdomen through which surgical instruments will be inserted and guided in the abdominal cavity with the help of the laparoscope.

In the end, the laparoscope and other instruments are removed once the surgery is finished and the incisions are stitched.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Surgery

Recovery

After your surgery, you’ll be kept under observation. Our hospital’s professional staff at CKS Hospital would be monitoring your vital signs closely. They would also check that you don’t react adversely to the surgery or anaesthesia. Your staying time would depend on your overall health, how your body reacts to the surgery, and the type of anaesthesia used. If you have received general anaesthesia, you would have to ask a family member or a friend to drive you back home as the effects of general anaesthesia may take multiple hours to wear off.

You may experience mild pain in the incision areas after laparoscopic surgery for a few days. The pain would drop in a few days, and your doctor may prescribe you medication for relief. You may also experience some shoulder pain and bloating, which would get back to normal within a few days. Mostly, patients can resume their daily activities within a week of surgery. You need to visit CKS Hospital for follow-up after surgery as suggested by your doctor, where your doctor will ensure that you have recovered and no complications post-surgery.

For smooth recovery, ensure that you don’t perform any strenuous activity; otherwise, blood clots’ risk may increase. You must get more sleep and if you have a sore throat, use throat lozenges. Wear loose-fitting clothes so that your incision doesn’t get irritated.
